The city was originally established by Canadian engineers and takes its name from the Canadian province of Ontario. The city was incorporated in 1891 and currently has a population of about 170,000 people, many of whom are Hispanic immigrants who arrived as early as the 1840s. The area's history as the city of Ontario, CA began in 1881, when Canadian engineers George and William Chaffey bought the land and engineered an irrigation system that brought water down from the mountains. The arrangement was billed as a "Model Colony" and attracted citrus farmers and other farmers from the eastern states. The early make-up of the city was so mixed that they began an Independence Day tradition of hosting an "All-States Picnic" in 1939. There was a table for people from each state and the tradition earned them an entry in Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not under "world's longest picnic table." Though the current population doesn't consist of as many out-of-staters, the tradition was revived in 1991 as a civic event.
